Finding Inner Peace

Finding inner peace.In order to live well, we must live spiritually well. Our emotions are so entangled with others and their emotions. Others define us by who they think we should be. Our friends, our siblings, our parents, our husbands, our children. We are not always accepted for who we are. Demands, reasonable and unreasonable, are often placed upon us. Our value is sometimes based on what we do or don’t do for others. We, especially women, tend to define ourselves as others define us. But in order to be truly happy, you must be true to yourself. That does not mean be selfish, it simply means that you must know who you are.  You must define yourself. What makes you happy? What gives you peace? You must have the serenity to accept the things you cannot change, the courage to change the things you can and the wisdom to know the difference. Know that you can only change yourself. You can only control yourself. When it comes right down to it, people are simply who they are. And you can’t change that. In the words of  the great Maya Angelou, “The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

Finding peace in our relationships can be difficult. Remember that you are who you are supposed to be. That’s not to say we all couldn’t use a little improvement.  Use what you have to progress and move forward. Be grateful for the good things and focus on the positive. Take what is working in your relationships and build on that. This is the “change the things we can” part.

Serenity comes when we have done all we can do to heal our hearts.  Accept that we cannot change or control others. Accept that you may not be able to get everything you want but you can have what’s most important to you. Life is a compromise. Know what you can live with and what you can live without. We can heal our hearts through faith. If we love ourselves just as we are, we heal our hearts. We will have to constantly remind ourselves to call on our inner peace. Remind ourselves what it takes to  have serenity. What makes you happy? Something you do just for you. For me it’s sewing and gardening.  Both great stress relievers. Do you have a hobby that you gave up for life, work, children, marriage? Stay in touch with yourself. It is truly the key to your happiness.

Remember, Don’t sweat the small stuff. Sometimes life is a mess. It’s okay to leave it a mess!
